The Wasatch Front has beautiful mountain canyons all accessible easily from the city center. Big Cottonwood Canyon The 15-mile (24 km)-long canyon provides hiking, biking, picnicking, rock-climbing, camping and fishing in the summer. During winter, its two ski resorts, Brighton and Solitude, are popular among skiers and snowboarders. Hiking to the canyon's mountain lakes is a popular activity. The canyon is also a frequent destination for wildflower walks and for University of Utah botanical field trips.
Little Cottonwood Canyon lies roughly 15 miles south of Salt Lake City. Mountain goats inhabit the surrounding mountains. Recreational activities in Little Cottonwood Canyon include hiking, camping, fishing, mountain biking, rock climbing, skiing, snowboarding, and backcountry use. There are two resorts in the canyon, Alta and Snowbird, providing both summer and winter recreational opportunities. The Utah Native Plant Society often conducts wildflower walks in the canyon. The road is approximately 8.3 miles from the base of the canyon to the top with an average grade of 9.2%, making it a popular road cycling challenge.
Emigration Canyon beginns at the southern end of the University of Utah, the canyon itself heads east and northeast between Salt Lake City and Morgan County. Emigration Canyon was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961 - this is where the Mormon pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. Mountain biking and hiking are popular activities. The Hogle Zoo is situated at the mouth of the Canyon and Ruth's Diner is a favorite place among locals to enjoy a wonderful meal on their outdoor, creekside patio.
Mill Creek Canyon is one of Salt Lake City’s most popular recreation areas. The recreation opportunities abound. Picnicking, hiking, biking, or just plain old lounging in the outdoors are all available here. The canyon begins off of Wasatch Boulevard on 3800 South. Homes are located in the mouth of the Canyon although the bench and foothill areas below are also called Millcreek.
Parley's Canyon Parley's Canyon begins where Interstate 215 merges into I-80 in Salt Lake City and ends at Parley's Summit. On the other side of the summit the freeway unfolds into Park City and the Heber Valley - home to several ski resorts, with more rural and exclusive homes.
City Creek Canyon While there is no housing in the canyon, it's close proximity to downtown (about 1 mile) provides easy access for Avenues residents. The canyon's hiking and mountain biking trails provide scenic views in all directions.
